Eat the Health Smart Way!

The Health Smart way to eating healthy is to do it at your own pace and start with these easy tips.  Your health is important and knowing what healthy food choices to make is a step in the right direction.

  • One of the challenges to healthy snacking is not having a good snack ready when the craving hits.  Have cut-up raw vegetables like broccoli, carrots and cauliflower with a dip for an afternoon snack.
  • Snack on the perfect to-go foods: Grapes, celery sticks, banana, or an apple.
  • Try something new and combine fruits of different flavors, like red grapes with pineapple chunks.
  • Keep dried fruit and nuts in your desk drawer for a quick and easy mid-morning snack.
Eating Healthy

Benefit from healthy eating habits and reduce many of your risk factors – such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and being overweight.  A healthy diet does not have to be bland and boring with these three simple steps: eat less fat and less salt, and eat more fiber.

1. Eat Less Fat

  • Eat leaner cuts of meat and more fish.
  • Avoid butter and lard, and use less margarine.
  • If you drink milk, drink 1% or skim milk.
  • Get a heart-healthy cookbook and try some low-fat recipes.

2. Eat Less Salt

  • Instead of salt, season your food with herbs and flavorings such as lemon, garlic, and onion.
  • Avoid using high-salt ingredients such as MSG (ajinomoto), soy sauce, patis, and baking soda.

3. Eat More Fiber

  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Add oats, whole-grain rice, and bran to your diet.
  • Beans and potatoes are excellent sources of fiber.
